Went here for lunch the other week with coworkers. Although the inside can be a zoo and noisy during peak hours, if you can grab a table on the patio it's a fabulous place to relax and dine. The sandwich and salad portions are generous and made right there in front of you so you can easily customize what you like, which is great. I like the deli section where you can easily get tiny cups of many different things and sort of sample whatever you like. There's so much variety and choice, it's the perfect place to go if you have a large group of people with different tastes and palates.

I don't think this place is anything extra-ordinary, just a basic deli. I think the sandwiches are overpriced...I don't believe 2 slices of bread, some meat, and some condiments constitute a $9 price tag. You will notice, however, that the place is packed all the time. I think this is because the majority of people like basic classic tastes. In general, I don't think Palmer's is "bad", it's "okay" at doing what it does - making sandwiches, but the price is too much for me to want to return again. I would rather go to Manhattan Deli in Des Moines. It is not SO MUCH MORE homey, personalized, and has that local towney charm. Not to mention the meats at Manhattan Deli are actually made in-house.

I grew up in Des Moines, but moved to Kansas City, after college and NOTHING in KC compares to Palmer's Deli. EVERY TIME my husband and I return to Des Moines, we eat at Palmer's. I always get their salads... a meat and two sides (north shore chicken, italian tomatoes, and tortellini). My husband always gets their Marshall Fields sandwich and we both get a 7-layer bar to go. This place is an institution and I have NEVER had a bad experience. The food is dependable, tasty, and always worth the money. I love Palmers.

I've eaten lunch at the various locations numerous times, and really liked it. However, this review is about their catering. I ordered a basic sandwich platter and sides to serve 12 people after church. The store wasn't open on Sunday, but they made arrangements for someone to let me in to pick up my order anyway. Most other places would have simply told me too bad, not open. Everything was very nicely packed up and it included everything I'd need: plates, napkins, condiments, serving spoons, etc. The food was very good as always. I will definitely use Palmer's again for their fantastic catering service!

Oh Palmer's how I love thee! Fantastic selection of sandwiches, soups and salads. You walk around and pick out what you want at every station before heading to the register. They have a small selection of cookies and bars for dessert too. Their molasses cookies are my absolute favorite! Many locations around DSM but I prefer the one on Ingersoll.

Good sandwiches (made to order or try one of their specialties) and a wide variety of salads and sides (the broccoli and raisin salad was great) at a good price. I had the Turnberry sandwich, which was good, although I wish it had some lettuce on it.

love the location, the food, and the buzz of the place. it's a real community center it seems. great food. big portions. a little pricey. big lines at high noon.

They have fresh made sandwiches, fresh soups, fresh market items, fresh salads and desserts like brownies and cookies and fresh and ready in a flash. But be ready to dig deep into your wallet as they sandwiches are over 5 dollars and the rest of the stuff is pricy too.

The one time I went, I asked for pastrami sliced thick instead of their usual thin and the woman waiting on me gave me the stink eye the whole time. She also punished me by skimping on the pastrami. I felt like crying.

Overpriced for deli food. You can walk out of there with a $20+ for two people for lunch. North Shore Chicken is very good, and their Brownies are awesome.

Review stars based on what this place is, a deli. I have loved Palmer's for many, many years. They are the only place in the country that I will eat chicken salad; the North Shore Chicken Salad is very unique and I love it. Good variety of other deli salads. Many non-meat selections. Everything seems to be freshly made that day. Sandwiches are made to order, so are designer salads. Friendly, helpful, efficient staff. No table orders, you order at the counter. Meager, but wonderfull selection of deserts. More pricey than most deli's, but worth the difference. I will go out of my way to go here and also the other locations.

Really large selection of food. Palmer's offers sandwiches, twice-baked potatoes, enchiladas, and a variety of wine. And their cookies are AMAZING! The only drawback is the cost.

Drove through Iowa on a road trip and was told by a friend and local of Des Moines to try Palmer's. Excellent sandwiches, and so many to choose from it was almost hard to decide because everything sounded so good. Heard it gets pretty busy around lunch time, but we arrived around 2 and had no problems. Wish there was a location in Colorado, but until then if I ever find myself back in Iowa I will be back!

They have all you could want from a soup, sandwich, and salad place. Also have some desert to choose from. I stop in here when I can, they have a lot of options if you want different tastes at a great price. Very big inside, so if you are in a rush you should be able to grab a seat, very nice decor for a sandwich place. Anytime you can break away from the typical sandwich chains, Palmers is the place to go.

oh palmer's i've missed you so much. I loved Palmer's when I lived here; I missed Palmer's when I moved; I've moved back and I still love you! Even after living in NYC, Palmer's is hands down the best deli I've ever eaten at. It's one of the few places you can get Boar's Head meats/cheeses in Iowa. The sandwiches are awesome (hello, beef eater, my love), salads are super fresh and dressings rule, and omg all the side salads! Do not forget the desserts. bananatucket? yes please! yes they are over priced. totally. but dammit, I'm addicted and can't stop! (and I don't want to stop!)

THE ABSOLUTE BEST TURN-OVER PASTRIES HANDS DOWN. My boss brought a boxfull of these seemingly plain looking pastries to work one morning, and it took a few hours until I finally decided to help myself to one. O-M-G. One bite literally woke me up.....savory, buttery, flakey goodness with just a hint of sweetness to keep the flavor notes tickling your taste buds. (picture the flavor notes scene out of the movie, Ratatouille) then.......for weeks, I was insanely craving these pastries until i felt compelled enough to ask my boss where purchased them from........"PALMERS" he said. =)

Restaurant is clean and trendy. Wonderful outdoor seating. I was there with a large group of friends after a run. Food was visually appealing, delicious and fast. The coffee was HORRIBLE and I guess that is a joke among the regulars as they warned me before I drank it.

Very confusing and slow line to get food and checkout. Chicken salad was great. Reheated quiche was very dense and not good at all. I hope they have more cashiers for lunch rushes, otherwise it wouldn't be a great lunch spot.

I really dig Palmer's! With multiple locations in town and so many selections on the menu it's a go to for a big group and you can't go wrong! YES there is something for everyone! I have ordered out for a group of 12 here, and they make it easy! They have the 3 S's down! 1. Soups 2. Salads 3. Sandwiches Lots of great Vegan options for me, and they will make you pretty much anything you want! It's also very affordable and their to go packages are environmentally friendly I dig it!

The lunch hour brings a hefty wait to the Signature Sandwich line but everyone in that line will tell you the sandwiches are worth it. They would be right. Beware that the words "grilled" or "steamed" are synonymous with "add 3-4 minutes" but again, worth it if that's your style. Need to be in and out more quickly? The line for the salads moved much faster but we were both ok to wait. He had a Cowboy with corned beef, cheddar, pepper jack, western dressing and I had the Meat Eater with two fabulous steamed meats and melted cream cheese. Not my normal kind of sandwich but worth the recommendation. We had another line for check-out as they seemed to be understaffed a man, but it moved quickly. With all that customer traffic, there was still plenty of seating for us to choose. I'm a fan!

A favorite for family dinners! Palmer's offers a wide variety with great options for healthier eating. I love The Wave but if I'm going for something light, their veggie salad is delightful!!

Palmer's brownies are the most delicious. That alone deserves 5 stars! Soups, salads (all kinds) sandwiches, and other desserts round out the solid deli food available for one & all. Recently my dad schooled me while enjoying lunch here...the US Secretary of Agriculture was also enjoying his lunch here. I told my dad all I see is former Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack...he rolled his eyes and said that was then, this is now, LOL

Solid, had a mixed salad as well as the wave. The wave was as good as I've ever had, the salad was good, fresh veggies and good balsamic dressing. The only negative was for a first timer it was a tad confusing with several stations. Although I figured it out pretty quickly thanks to an older ladies advice.

My Son and I stopped in at this Palmer's Catering Deli & Market last Saturday for a late Lunch after our annual visit to the Iowa State Fair. I enjoyed the attractive open interior architecture, the friendly service, and my really good sandwich. There's lots to choose from, and I think the Kid wishes in hindsight that he would have expanded beyond his delicious soup choice. I stuck to soft drinks, although wine and beer are available at the center aisle. There's also baked goods, as well as heat and serve dishes available for take out.

What a great experience. The food was great and the service was wonderful. A couple of staff helped me order and explained the options. I would definite recommend if you are looking for a sandwich and soup/salad.

If you want a great salad or sandwich, this is the best place in town. An old style deli freshened up. Huge clean modern. Never been disappointed. Order at the counter and they bring it out to your table. Try anything. You'll enjoy it

I'd say this is really a 2.5 star review, but the option wasn't available to me. I'm not sure what to make of this place. It's an interesting concept offering deli selections along with sandwiches, salads, and soups and probably more stuff than I care to remember. It's a jack of all trades, pro at none. My first experience was a basic roast beef sandwich meal, but the sauce on it was overwhelmingly sweet. There wasn't nearly enough roast beef, and what was there was kinda generic tasting. Have you ever had that pre-sliced salty roast beef that comes pre packaged at the supermarket? I've had 10x better roast beef from whole foods which is worth the exuberant price. This is not. Next time I tried and disliked a large Greek salad. I made some fair substitutions on it and they tried to charge me extra. Just say no to a fast casual salad creeping over 10$. Dressing was watery, fetta was store-bought and it failed to impress.. Cookies were tasty and side dishes such pasta and potato salad were well above average. Still good sides alone does not make a good meal. The dining area was large and clean and they seem to keep the food coming at a steady pace even while busy.

Went here when it wasn't busy - good thing because the ordering seems to have been a problem if there was a lot of people. I ordered a Ruben type sandwich and even though it was grilled on the outside, was cold inside. Had some soup and a beer.

You can never go wrong here for lunch (which is usually crowded) or a quick and casual dinner. Excellent sandwiches and salads; would highly recommend the Turnberry and the Cowboy.

I stumbled upon Palmers in my search for a comparable pastrami to Langer's Delicatessen in LA. Wanting to try their pastrami I ordered the Reuben, which consisted of thinly cut pastrami with swiss cheese and sauerkraut press grilled between two slices of pumpernickel rye bread. The pastrami was moist and soft but it lacked flavor, but the bread was nicely toasted. Overall it was decent but wasn't able to satiate my craving for Langer's thick-cut pastrami. It was however superior to the other sandwich I tried, the Turnberry. The Turnberry consists of turkey, swiss cheese, cream cheese and cranberry chutney. The cranberry chutney was too overpowering, all i could taste was cinnamon spice. The worst part of that sandwich was finding the maker's hair in my sandwich. Palmer's really needs to consider making their workers wear caps, nothing ruins a meal quite like stringy hair.

This is the nicest of all the Palmer's locations in Des Moines. Definitely my favorite as far as atmopshere goes, and the hours are a little better than some of the other locations too (this one is open until 9 on weeknights - several of the other locations close after the lunch rush). My favorites are the Wisconsin cheese soup, the Marshall Field, the Turnberry, and the fantastic Reuben. Damn right it's expensive, but you get what you pay for - this is quality food we're talking about. Now, if they were only open on Sundays...!

wow....totally impressed. my buddy and i stopped here on the way to the airport and i felt like i was in some kind of edible farmers market. there are essentially 3 stations, almost cafeteria/deli style. one for made to order salads, another for sandwiches and soup, and another for non-lettuce style salads (pasta, potatoe, etc). their selections were quite extensive and i actually had a hard time choosing which line to stand in. decided for a tuna salad sandwich and vegetable soup. the tuna was nicely diced and not full of mayo. the soup was a bit bland, but still tasted pretty good for vegetable soup. their giant cookies looked scrumptious but after a degenerate weekend binge, i needed to start smart for the week. by the time we left, the place was packed with the lunch crowd. decent prices and excellent food.

As usual, asked for recommendation...staff was not very helpful. Tried the Market Turkey (#8) with a side of Italian tomato salad. Apathetic counter service. Good food. Busboy was rude. Food and lower expectations saved this review.

Really good soups and sandwiches, and they have the best brownies and cookies...but they really are overpriced, and I tend to only go here when a friend insists we meet here for lunch. (Manhattan Deli has better sandwiches for a cheaper price in my opinion, and is closer to my house anyways). Why does it only have one $ in the info run down? It should be 2 $$'s.

Palmers is local, great food. I agree with others that the Ingersoll location is the best. It has the good vibes and the fact that it is open more hours. My personal favorite thing to do at Palmers is the salad sampler. The salads are fresh, not tired and creative. I especially like the egg salad or the smoked turkey and almond salad. It's seasonal, put they have served a fresh strawberries with whipped cream salad! Heaven. Why 4 stars not 5? The open is space is contemporary and some what cold. The TVs are distracting, and when it is busy, it is too noisy to have a conversation with your partner.

Fantastic sandwiches, good soup, and fresh salads. The cookies and brownies are incredible. You can eat here every day for a week and never eat the same thing twice (nor get bored). This is my favorite sandwich place in Des Moines.
